Surviving Kitacon – Extended 45 Minute Edit.
Adam Phillips for one weekend in April is going to experience his first animé convention. Upon arrival at Kitacon Adam will throw himself at a varied list of activities, attending the opening ceremony before relaying his first impressions of the convention to camera in the bar. Later on in that day he will attend the infamous yaoi panels to fully experience just what draws in the masses to this particular niche of animé fandom before hitting the J-Pop disco, where Adam will have his first taste of the Japanese musical dance scene.
On the second day Adam gets creative and enters the “Build-A-Mecha” contest, an event in which you build a mechanical creation out of household cardboard boxes. The result is a creation that spent the day floating around the convention. For the rest of the afternoon Adam had a chance to interact with the other attendees and explore the rest of the convention, chatting to cosplayers about their reasoning to attend these conventions and also asking advice on what events he should attend while at the convention, while talking to various people Adam gets the impression that these people may be ‘nerds’ but are not the stereotypical type he expected. While chilling out in the ‘artist’s alley’ Adam chats with some more of the other attendees and gets a picture drawn of himself before adding the scroll that everyone is free to draw on before sitting down to watch the big event of the day. The ‘Masquerade’, a catwalk runway for people to show off their best costumes, which is possibly the biggest event at any convention before hitting the AMV (animé music video) disco, for a night of 80′s tunes and animé.
On the final day Adam gets a bit more involved in the cosplay element of the convention, dressing up as a character from the popular animé D.Gray-man, and to his surprise while playing pool was asked to join a photo shoot for that particular series. During which Adam experiences what the essence of cosplay is and relays his thoughts on his participation, before being let of the leash to enjoy himself, and after a long night says his final thoughts to camera. Did he survive Kitacon, and what did he learn from his experiences? You’ll just have to watch to find out.
